Bridging Gaps: Striving for Cohesion in Leadership

Have you ever been on a team where leadership wasn't in sync? How did it affect you? How did it affect the company culture?

As I approach nearly 14 years in the Retail sector, I can confidently state that Retail is not for everyone and can be rife with ups and downs. And when it comes to Specialty Retail specifically, it can feel like being on a Tilt-a-Whirl. If you're unfamiliar, picture this: Instead of a predictable roller coaster with its visible twists and turns, the Tilt-a-Whirl offers cars that rotate unpredictably based on the weight and position of its riders. It's thrilling, but you never quite know which direction you'll spin next.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Specialty Retail, it has had its high highs and for sure its low lows, but I love the pace and all the challenges it has to offer. Through my career journey in both small and large organizations, I've recognized that while every leader and every team member offer invaluable contributions, there's a quartet of leadership roles that require a unique level of cohesion: the CEO, COO/CRO, CFO, and the CPO. Together, these four are on the front lines of broad challenges that can at times make or break a business. Their cohesion can profoundly impact both the full leadership team and the company culture.

Consider each of these roles:

  • The CEO, as the visionary, ensures the company's forward momentum by focusing on the broader strategy.

  • The CFO ensures financial sustainability by keeping the books balanced and profits in sight.

  • The CPO, representing the human perspective, strives for decisions that respect and benefit the team.

  • The COO/CRO, acting as the linchpin, orchestrates daily operations to ensure continuity.

When these roles operate in silos, it's like knocking the aforementioned Tilt-a-Whirl into overdrive—creating an unstable foundation for the business. But, when there is balance, it can be magic! The balance comes when there is strong communication, trust, a unified vision, and mutual respect, all of which help to create a stable foundation on which an entire organization can thrive. I have experienced both cohesive and fractured leadership scenarios, especially when serving multiple businesses, and I won’t hesitate to confirm riding the Tilt-a-Whirl in overdrive is not very fun. The more fractured this group of four is, the greater the turbulence felt throughout the senior leadership team. This instability becomes evident to employees through mixed messages, a lack of clarity, disorganization, and a palpable sense of discord at the top. Such issues can negatively influence the company culture.

While I've emphasized only four senior leadership roles, the alignment and collaboration of the entire senior leadership team is undeniably crucial. When there is cohesion among the four roles I have highlighted and they exemplify excellence in collaboration, communication, and strategic partnership, not only is the strength of the whole team enhanced, but the company culture also benefits.
